Russia to start direct flights to Cyprus

According to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Russia will start operating direct flights to the occupied areas of Cyprus.

The Turkish newspaper is citing diplomatic sources, according to which the Russian government agreed to start operating flights to Ercan airport in North Cyprus.

The first flight, according to Milliyet, will take place on 15 November, the anniversary of the establishment of the TRNC. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will reportedly be on the first flight.

The date will also mark the inauguration of a new airport in North Cyprus.

Milliyet commented that this development is seen as a diplomatic victory.

TRNC President Ersin Tatar said the beginning of direct flights from Russia to the TRNC is a very important step for the recognition of the state.

In statements to the Turkish newspaper, Tatar noted that Turkey already carries out flights to Ercan airport since 1970.
