We will not renew the… Tatar’s (expired) passport

With the revocation and non-renewal of the passports of the Republic of Cyprus held by the members of the cabinet of the TRNC and the presidential committee for the opening of Varosha and the TRNC President Ersin Tatar, the Anastasiades government responded to The actions in Famagusta, adopting, in essence, proposals that they had supported in the national council, when the issue was discussed, only ELAM, EDEK and DIKO were discussed.

Specifically, South Cyprus Council of Ministers, in yesterday’s meeting at the Presidential residence in Troodos, decided unanimously, following the recommendation of the Minister of Interior, to revoke the travel documents held by officials of the TRNC and are in force, as well as the non-renewal of expired passports, as is the case with the TRNC President Ersin Tatar, as well as the non-extradition to those of the affected persons who do not hold relevant documents.

In his statements, after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, South Cyprus government spokesman Marios Pelekanos said that the decision concerns persons who, through their actions or actions, undermine the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus, contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.

“They are the same persons”, as he said, “who, with their specific actions hostile to the Republic of Cyprus, promote the implementation of Turkey’s plans to change the status of the enclosed area of Varosha, in contrast to the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and in particular resolutions 550 and 789, which concern the status of the enclosed area of Famagusta”.

The decision of the Minister specifically affects 14 persons, who according to “Kipris Postasi” are the following:

    • TRNC President, Ersin Tatar.
    • Prime Minister, Ershan Saner.
    • Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tahsin Ertugruloglou.
    • Minister of National Education and Culture, Olgun Amtzaoglou.
    • Minister of the Interior, Kutlu Evren.
    • Minister of health, Unal Oustel.
    • Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nazim Çavusoglu.
    • Minister of Public Works and Transport, Resmiye Janaltay Eroglu.
    • Minister of Tourism and Environment, Fikri Attaoglou.
    • Minister of Labour and Social Security, Coral Chagman.

However, sources within the South Cyprus government refused to confirm the names mentioned in the publication of Kipris Postasi, for reasons of personal data protection.

As we have been told, each affected person should first be informed by the Director-General of the Ministry of Interior before any reference is made to the names of those Turkish Cypriots affected by the decision of the Ministry.

    A new climate of tension

Asked, however, whether the decision to revoke travel documents is fuelling the mood ahead of the descent to the island of un special envoy Jane Hall Lute, in late August or early September, in an attempt to find common ground between the sides, South Cyprus government spokesman Marios Pelican replied to the newspaper “no comment”.

    First reactions

The Prime Minister of the TRNC, Ersan Saner, described South Cyprus ministerial’s decision to revoke passports as a hostile action, expressing his regret.

In his statements on the matter, Mr. Saner said: “After discussing the decisions with the President (Ersin Tatar), we will present explanatory information to the public.

I hope that Cyprus Cyprus will reconsider this decision, which was taken in the name of hostility.”

Legal nonsense characterized the decision of the Cabinet, the president of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhiurman.

In a post on social media, Mr Erhiurman said that “the decision on the passport is legal nonsense! Keep dealing politically with mutually useless things!”
