Un is moving towards the appointment of a special representative

Anastasiades described as creative the informal trilateral meeting he had with the UNSG and with Ersin Tatar on Monday night in New York. He also pointed out that the Secretary-General is moving towards appointing a special representative to explore Confidence Building Measures and the possibility of finding common ground for a future prospect of resuming dialogue, with announcements to be expected tomorrow from the UN.

Specifically, after the meal, Anastasiades told the media that “it was, I have to say, a creative meeting. Of course the differences were recorded. Mr Tatar developed the positions on sovereign equality and on two independent states and, of course, I developed our own position which is fully in line with un resolutions, the mandate of the SG on the basis of resolutions, and we have developed various ways of moving forward in order to overcome the deadlocks, but also to create prospects for resuming a creative dialogue. Details, you will understand, cannot be said, but what I want to stress is that we have not failed to point out everything that had to be pointed out in order to create the right perceptions of what is being heard from the other side, but at the same time to be creative in the further direction.

The SG seems to be oriented towards appointing a special envoy in order to explore Confidence Building Measures, as well as the possibility of finding common ground for a future prospect of resuming dialogue. A relevant announcement will be issued tomorrow by the UN, by the Office of the SG after consultation with both sides.”

Asked if the UNSG referred to a specific person in relation to the appointment of a special envoy, Anastasiades replied in the negative.

When asked if there would be another meeting with the SG and Mr Tatar, Anastasiades said “no for the time being, we have not agreed (that)”.

Asked how the UNSG and Mr. Tatar welcomed the proposal of Anastasiades to return to the Constitution of the ’60s, Anastasiades said that the SG is not to comment positively or negatively. What holds back is anything that can be an incentive to bring the two communities together. Mr. Tatar maintains his own positions and therefore, in the eyes of the inaudible.”
