    Turkish Cypriot on Ayia Napa attack: “I don’t want the incident to escalate into hostility between the two communities”

    Two people handcuffed for the attack and injury of a 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman in Ayia Napa - A third person is wanted

    “I do not want this incident to escalate into any tension and hostility between the two communities,” the 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman who was attacked by two Greek Cypriots in Ayia Napa in the early hours of Saturday, June 3rd, said in a new Facebook post.

    “At that moment I reacted shocked by the incident I experienced. For the first time in my life I have faced such an incident,” says the 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot.

    “The Greek police in Cyprus,” as the Republic of Cyprus Police characterizes, “intervened in the incident and arrested the attackers at the moment a complaint was made.”

    “I would like to thank all authorities involved in the incident both in the south and north,” she concluded.

    Under 4-day detention

    The Famagusta District Court issued on Sunday, June 4, a detention order for four days against two people aged 22 and 30 to facilitate police investigations into a case of assault and causing grievous bodily harm to a 25-year-old woman.

    Third person sought

    Police are looking for another person in the case and are evaluating CCTV footage in the area.

    The President of South Cyprus contacted Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar last night and they discussed the unacceptable incident of the beating of the 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot in Ayia Napa by two Greek Cypriots.

    After condemning the incident, Christodoulides explained to the Turkish Cypriot leader that the Greek Cypriots involved were arrested and placed under 4-day detention and will be brought to justice.

    He also explained that the incident does not appear to be an incident of racist attack but of unacceptable and condemnable delinquent behavior.
