Soccer fans in Turkey have launched a campaign against a decision by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to scrap annual Turkey’s Young Girls’ Football Championship.

The petition launched on change.org follows a decision by the TFF, the governing body of football in Turkey, in early September to pull the plug on the championship, which has been held for years and features female football players aged 16-18 from over 100 teams from all over Turkey.

“It is unacceptable for the TFF to cancel women’s football claiming that it does not provide ‘the necessary productivity,’ when the football plays a role in bolstering women and other disadvantaged groups in breaking social gender norms,” the petition said.

The TFF should see women’s soccer as a social responsibility project and allocate a budget and corresponding policy, accordingly, it added.
