Turkey receives second batch of Russian S-400 missile system

Turkeys’ National Defence Ministry on Tuesday announced the country had received the second batch of the Russian S-400 missile defence system.

The delivery process of the system, which arrived at Murted Air Base near Ankara, will take around one month, the ministry said on Twitter.

Turkey received its first supply of the S-400 missiles in July amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Ankara over the Russian system.

The United States removed Turkey from the F-35 joint strike fighter programme over the purchase, citing the incompatibility of the S-400 with Western-made NATO systems and the security risks posed by the operation of the system alongside the F-35.

Turkey also faces the possibility of mandatory U.S. sanctions over the S-400 purchase under a 2017 law on cooperation with “adversaries.”

Ankara has said the S-400 would not be integrated into the NATO systems and therefore would not pose any threat to NATO or its armaments.
