Tatar: For 2 states in New York, I did not get an official invitation

The position that there are two sovereign, independent states in Cyprus and that the Turkish Cypriot side has abandoned the bicommunal, bi-zonal federation as the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, will be conveyed to his contacts in New York by the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. He also said he has not received a formal invitation to a trilateral meeting with the UNSG at the agency’s headquarters.

In his statements before his departure for New York, Mr. Tatar said he would have a meeting with the UNSG as well as other contacts. He said that in Geneva and Brussels, the SG had told him that he was waiting for him in New York along with his team.

The position of the Turkish Cypriot side, he said, is the promotion of the six points as he presented them in Geneva, adding that after his election to the presidency in the occupied territories, there is an agreement to promote a two-state solution, independent, sovereign states that will coexist side by side.

According to Mr. Tatar, Mr. Guterres called on them to bring new ideas and that from the contacts of the Special Adviser, Jane Hall Lute, it is understood that there is no common ground between the two sides. The basis, he said, is the bi-communal, bi-zonal federation but the Turkish Cypriot side has left this policy, adding that this parameter should be re-evaluated. The accession of South Cyprus to the EU before a solution of the Cyprus problem, he claimed, made the problem more complex, adding that this issue will be analyzed in New York.

“There is a reality in Cyprus. There are two peoples, two different states,” and added that it is inconceivable to continue a process based on the federation where the majority dominates the minority and to stop ties with Turkey. He will explain, he said, in detail this new policy, adding that what is important for him is the protection of the rights, interests and existence of the Turks of Cyprus.

The state, with the support of Turkey, according to Mr Tatar, will continue to exist in the eastern Mediterranean, for a better future.

Referring to the tripartite meeting, he said he has not received a formal invitation to it. He will travel, he said, to New York at the invitation of the UN and that the important thing is that he will have contacts with the United Nations and various countries. If he receives a formal invitation to such a meeting, he said, he will evaluate it and there is no reason for anyone to exaggerate the issue.

Our position is clear. If our sovereign equality is not accepted, our international equal status is not accepted, we will not enter into formal negotiations. This was clearly stated in Geneva following consultations with Turkey. No one is going to make us abandon this position, adding that he does not avoid dialogue and that he will be present if he gets an official invitation.

He recalled that the inauguration of the House of Turkey in New York will take place next Monday by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and one of the 36 floors will be given to the TRNC.
