Sovereign equality to attend talks is proposed by Tatar

"Will you accept our sovereign equality or not? If it is not done, there is no point in sitting at the official negotiating table."

In order to sit at a negotiating table, the framework must be defined, said Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar, while addressing the question to Greek Cypriot President Christodoulides whether or not he will accept the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriots.

The Turkish Cypriot President, concluding his visit to London, spoke to various media. In statements to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Mr Tatar said his approach is clear, as in order to start negotiations sovereign equality must be accepted. “Will you accept our sovereign equality or not? If it is not done, there is no point in sitting down at the official negotiating table,” he said.
He argued that Christodoulides will not say anything different from the well-known positions of the Greek Cypriots.

Ersin Tatar referred to the contacts he had in the British capital but also to the protest of Greek and Greek Cypriot students outside King’s College. “This insult to me, in fact, was an insult, an insult and an attack on the Turkish Cypriot people, which has also taken place throughout the Turkish world.

So the other side will probably learn a lesson from that,” he said.

He reiterated that he will continue to explain the “Cyprus case” and the law of the Turkish Cypriots.

If there is an agreement in Cyprus, he continued, it will now be between two equal sovereign states, adding that the dissolution of the TRNC will not be accepted.

In his statements to the Turkish Cypriot website Kipris post, Mr. Tatar referred to both his meetings and the protest, saying that it was not appropriate for university students.

He noted that the Greek Cypriots shouted “Turkey out of Cyprus”, “The Turks out”. They cannot digest the leader elected by the Turkish Cypriots as their “president”, he concluded.
