South Cyprus Cabinet to revoke passports of T/C leaders

The South Cyprus Cabinet on Monday will also focus on whether to revoke passports from leaders in the Turkish-held breakaway northern part of the divided island who hold Republic of Cyprus passports. Even though they do not recognize the legitimate Greek-Cypriot government that is a member of the European Union.

This includes incumbent Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar who is a hardline nationalist opposing reunification based on UN resolutions and backs Turkey’s new proposal for a two-state solution in Cyprus.

South Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will chair Monday’s meeting of the cabinet at the presidential summer residence in the Troodos mountains.

The travel document issue was raised in the wake of moves by the authorities in the north to open parts of the fenced-off area of Famagusta, known as Varosha.

The Cabinet will be presented with a specific proposal on the travel documents drafted by the Law Office in cooperation with the Presidency, Philenews reports.

Insiders said the list has about 20 ‘officials’ on and that it only refers to the revocation of travel documents and not the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus.
