A reaction to the greek council of ministers’ cancellation of the passports of the Republic of Cyprus by the political figures in the Opening of Maras came from one of them, Oguzhan Hasipoglu, a member of the Presidential Committee for the Opening of Maras.
“I think the main pain of the Greek administration is that many Greek Cypriots want to return to Maras under our rule”.
Here is Hasipooglu’s explanation:
The Greek Cypriot Council of Ministers announced that “those who are in the Trnc Council of Ministers and featured in the Opening of Maras have decided to revoke the passport of the Republic of Cyprus, refuse to renew it or not issue a passport of the Republic of Cyprus”.
The Greek Cypriot government has actually revoked the passport of the Republic of Cyprus, which it hijacked at gunpoint and which we are equal co-founders of. I don’t think this decision has any legal validity. Aside from the controversy over passport cancellation, it is interesting that this cancellation was given as a reaction to our opening of Maras!
The Greek Cypriot government either does not understand or does not want to understand what we are referring to from the Maras Opening. Unfortunately, the racist, outdated and inhumane mentalities of the Greek Cypriot government have not changed!
In all these years of negotiations, did we not propose to leave Maras to the Greek Cypriot administration as the Turkish Cypriot side?
In return, we had perfectly reasonable, humane proposals; The isolations being applied to the Turkish Cypriot people should stop insisting on the lifting of the embargoes, Ercan airport should start direct flights, and in the context of the comprehensive solution negotiations, in a very nutshell, they should share the management of this island with us within the framework of the parameter of political equality.
We did not expect any more enjoyment of the Greek administration, which did not show flexibility in the isolations that are the simplest human right, and we realized the Opening of Maras, where we were even late.
We couldn’t be more captive to a mindset that rejects all our proposals at the negotiating table.
However, if the Greek Cypriot government had accepted one of our proposals, would there not have been a win-win for both sides today? We would not be under isolation, they would be the dominant owners of Maras!
We are opening this area, which they have kept closed for years, in the interest of the whole island, and we will continue to do so.

Although not with the management of the Greek side, perhaps for the first time in history, they were disturbed by the possibility that the Greek Cypriot people and the TRNC administration could reach a common consensus on the basis of Maras. Perhaps they were concerned that this unity of understanding would lead us to cooperation on the basis of two sovereign peoples in the future. This passport cancellation is a manifestation of these concerns.
