Cavusoglu’s unacceptable statements on Cyprus ahead of the trilateral meeting in Berlin

Statements by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou on Cavusoglu’s unacceptable statements ahead of the trilateral meeting in Berlin
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th November 2019, Nicosia

Turkish Foreign Minister Mr. Cavusoglu in view of the upcoming trilateral meeting in Berlin clarifies what Turkey’s stance is and under what preconditions Turkey will accept to once again enter into negotiations.

The positions he puts forward are unacceptable. They are positions that in reality undermine every effort for a resumption of meaningful negotiations.

Of course, what it is demanding, in our view, is covered quite satisfactorily in the Secretary General’s Framework.

Mr. Guterres talks very clearly in his Framework about political equality, the effective participation of the Turkish Cypriot community in the governance of the country and makes it clear that they will have a positive vote, but not everywhere.

For that reason, if Turkey disagrees with the Framework of the UN Secretary-General it should say so clearly and take on its responsibilities for any problems that will occur in the effort for a resumption of negotiations.

We shall once again address Mr. Akinci and Mr. Anastasiades to tell them that they are Cypriots and what should guide their thinking and decisions is how the interests of Cyprus and the Cypriot people as a whole are best served.

We urge them to assume their historic responsibilities, go to Berlin with the intention of working together so that we reach a conclusion on the terms of reference, and if and provided that Turkey continues to put obstacles it should take on the responsibility for whatever negative developments may follow.
