EU court deals blow to Cypriot bid to protect Halloumi cheese

A bid to defend Halloumi cheese against competition from a Bulgarian look-alike received a blow after a top European Union court disagreed with a Cypriot group protecting the savoury snack.

The Foundation for the Protection of the Traditional Cheese of Cyprus – owners of the Halloumi trademark – have been fighting a Bulgarian group seeking to register their BBQLOUMI cheese brand since 2014, arguing that people could easily confuse the two .
