Full ceasefire takes effect in eastern Ukraine

Years of fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists may finally be coming to a halt, as a full ceasefire went into effect on Monday (July 27). This isn’t the first ceasefire in the region, but it’s supported by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. And would put on hold a conflict that has claimed more than 13,000 lives since 2014. Ukrainian, Russian and OSCE negotiators agreed the ceasefire last week. Zelenskiy has aimed to end this fighting since his election last year and arranged a number of prisoner swaps. Ukraine and Russia have been foes since 2014, when Moscow seized Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula and backed the rebellion in the east of the country. Major combat ended with a ceasefire agreed in 2015, but sporadic fighting still regularly kills civilians, Ukrainian soldiers, and separatists alike.
