South Cyprus closes borders to 8 African countries

Like other countries, South Cyprus has closed its borders to eight African countries due to the “Omikron” variant, which is seen in Belgium, South Africa, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel and is considered much more dangerous than the Delta variant.

Alithia and other newspapers reported that the Greek Cypriot Government has closed its borders to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, and imposed a 10-day quarantine for its citizens returning to the South from these countries.

Strict controls will also be imposed on passengers from countries such as Israel, where a new variant has been detected at airports, according to the report.

    SCHOOL BOYCOTT FROM PARENTS

The same newspaper reported that the Greek Primary School Family Associations reacted to the Greek Government’s decision to impose masks and a one-week rapid test requirement on children aged 6 and over, which it will begin implementing on Monday (November 29th).

According to the report, the parents stated that they do not consent to the implementation of the Greek Cypriot Administration’s decisions on their children, and that if the decision is not reversed, they will not take their children to school on Monday, and will escalate the protests.

The Greek Ministry of Education has no intention of negotiating with parents or backing down, the newspaper said, while restaurant, movie owners and wedding-event organizers are beginning to hear new voices of desperation.

According to the newspaper, Maria Koliu, a member of the Scientific Council created for coronavirus, explained that 30 percent of the new cases, which have exceeded 4,000 in the last two weeks and reached 451 yesterday, are students under the age of 18 and stated that the new measures agreed by the Greek Cypriot Administration should be respected.
