Pompeo calls for pressure on ‘Frankenstein’ China

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo upped the ante with China on Thursday, calling for “more creative and assertive ways” to press the Chinese Communist Party to change its ways. In a speech at the Nixon presidential library in California, he called it the “mission of our time” for Washington and its allies. Pompeo pointed out former President Nixon’s own worries about what he’d done when he opened the world to China’s Communist Party in the 1970s. “President Nixon once said he feared he had created a ‘Frankenstein’ by opening the world to the CCP, and here we are.” Pompeo’s speech comes after a week of escalating US-China relations, with Washington’s surprise order for China to close its Houston consulate — a move for which Beijing said it ‘must’ retaliate. And on Friday China reacted to a week of escalating tensions and ordered the U.S to shut its colsulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu.
