Flames exceed 20 meters
A huge fire front comes from the north side with flames exceeding 20 meters in a pine-covered area in several places. The flames even covered the road from Lake to Ovies, resulting in the police stopping all traffic so as not to endanger human lives.
Firefighters are literally chasing the flames through the backyards of the houses and trying to save the houses which are scattered throughout the burning area.
It is typical that firefighters have lined up along the main road in Ovies waiting to tackle the flames that have approached. More than 20 fire trucks have lined up on the main road in Ovies creating a protection zone for homes, thus organizing the firefighters’ defense against the flames.
Apart from Ovies, the fire burns uncontrollably in the village of Kourkoula and is now heading towards Covered, while the other front stopped just before the Monastery of St. David. Another front is in Damia, while there is another front in Kalamoudi under the Monastery of St. David.
“Help us not to mourn human lives”
“We implore the State to immediately strengthen the ground and air forces so as not to mourn human lives”, stresses in dramatic tones the mayor of Lake, Giorgos Tsapourniotis, describing the situation as “hopeless”.
In the last few hours Paleochori and Demia are particularly tested as the flames pass through the villages, while at the same time in addition to the injuries of the 3 firefighters and their transport with slight burns to KY Mandoudi, the thick smokes have caused breathing problems for many residents of the village of Kourkoulis and some of them have already taken refuge in the Health Center of Mandoudi.
According to the commander of the 5th Ministry of Health, Fotis Seretis, -who spoke to the RES-IPA – “yesterday 6 people were transferred to the Mandoudi Health Centre and were accommodated there until this morning only for social reasons without presenting any particular problems – I just wanted them to feel more safe”.
He adds that “health forces have already been strengthened in the area, there is a constant presence of ambulances and their crews, if necessary, are dealing with any cases, without having any serious problems so far”.
