”In 2009, Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat planted two olive trees at the UN Good Offices, as a sign of their commitment to peace in Cyprus.
Today, on the International Day of Peace,
I am honored to unveil this plaque, at the same spot, to commemorate this important gesture.
These thriving trees are not only symbols of reconciliation, but also remind us to safeguard nature.
After all, a healthy and sustainable environment is crucial for future generations and is also a key ingredient for peace.
That is exactly what Secretary-General Guterres had in mind when he decided to focus this year’s International Day of Peace on climate action: conserving nature as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.” Elizabeth Spehar, Deputy SASG.
